Best Methods to Prove Organic Instagram ROI (What Actually Works)
Breaking down the attribution problem behind organic Instagram content and how to measure what truly converts
We’re thrilled to welcome Miguel Guerrero, formerly of Synthesia, as GTM Advisor at Leo AI.
Miguel was the first GTM hire at Synthesia and scaled the function to a team of 27 full-time employees - we feel incredibly fortunate to have him on board.
Last week I had the chance to sit down with Miguel to talk through our strategy, and I left that conversation feeling more energised than I have in months. It’s the kind of alignment and clarity that makes everything ahead feel very exciting.
We can’t wait to share more on what we’re building together, and as always, thank you for being along for the journey.
TLDR; The best methods to prove organic Instagram ROI are tracked story links and link-in-bio attribution. After testing multiple approaches, these two consistently gave us reliable data on which organic posts drive actual website visits and purchases.
Approaches that failed for Leo AI
Adding a tracked link to captions and comments: this will never work with mobile, where Instagram disables any links from opening a new page
Polling the Instagram Insights API for post analytics that show when a post results in new followers then querying any followers that weren’t there before the Insights API updated. Even though this seems easy, the Instagram API doesn’t offer (as of today, January 2026) an official way to query your own followers. You can hack it with web scraping tools, but this is asking for trouble, especially when you’re responsible for more than a single account.
What actually worked for Leo AI
Adding a tracked link to a story, and having posts / reels direct users to that story
Adding a Link in Bio which links to a specific post, giving you an idea of which website visits were the result of an organic post
Developed Marketing Team Approaches
I’ve seen brands defer to ‘brand traffic’ as an indicator of the success of each campaign, though this is usually counted in whole as opposed to a per-post success rate. This works well if reviewing the success of a digital marketing agency or an entire campaign which smaller brands do not have the resources to consistently track.
Why It’s So Hard to Prove ROI on Organic Posts
Instagram does deliberately add in nuance and abstraction so that the only metrics are coming from their ads platform.
Additionally, a lot of analytics, such as brand traffic are only available at a large enterprise scale, where smaller brands who are still experimenting with content for their target audience are left out of the benefits of tracking metrics like brand traffic. This is why the best social media ROI tracking software needs to work for teams without enterprise budgets.
Our Approach
Although typically link in bio and link in story approaches are exclusively used by large marketing teams with the capacity to action on the findings from organic posts, smaller teams can gain the same insights from automation.
For instance, using ‘Post Now’ tab will publish both the reel that links to the story, as well as having the link tracked within our platform for ROI all the way through to customer purchase.
FAQ
Q: What’s the best tool to prove Instagram organic content ROI? A: Tools that combine tracked story links with link-in-bio attribution and sync to your payment processor. This gives you post-level revenue data, not just engagement.
Q: Why don’t tracked links in Instagram captions work? A: Instagram disables clickable links in captions and comments on mobile. Story links and link-in-bio are the only reliable organic tracking methods.
Q: What are the best tools to prove marketing ROI to investors? A: Tools that connect organic posts to actual purchase data. Investors want to see revenue attributed to specific content, not vanity metrics.
